A&G Hauling and Junk Removal

What Actually Happens to Your Junk After It Leaves Your House

Most junk removal companies say they recycle and donate “whenever possible” and leave it there. That phrase tells you very little, so here is where household junk can end up, and which of those routes are legally required rather than optional.

The four places a load can go

Donation. Furniture and appliances in usable condition.

Recycling. Metal, cardboard, clean wood and electronics.

Specialist facilities. Refrigerants, batteries, e-waste and mattresses, each to somewhere licensed for that material.

Landfill. Only what is left after the first three.

The interesting part is that three of those routes are not a choice.

Mattresses do not go straight to landfill in California

California runs a statewide mattress recycling program created under the Used Mattress Recovery and Recycling Act, funded by a fee already paid when the mattress was bought.

Mattresses collected through the program are broken down so the foam, fiber, steel and wood can be recovered. Details are published by CalRecycle.

You paid for this at the point of purchase. It is worth using.

Refrigerators need a certified technician

Refrigerators, freezers and air conditioning units contain refrigerant that must be recovered before the metal can be scrapped. That requirement sits under Section 608 of the Clean Air Act and is enforced by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

This is why a fridge is not the same job as a wardrobe, even though they are roughly the same size.

Electronics are universal waste

California classifies most electronic devices as universal waste, handled under separate state rules rather than going out with ordinary household trash. The California Department of Toxic Substances Control publishes the requirements.

The reason is what is inside them. Older screens contain lead. Batteries contain lithium and cadmium. Circuit boards contain mercury.

Hazardous material needs its own route

Paint, solvents, motor oil, pesticides, pool chemicals and propane tanks do not belong in an ordinary junk load. They need a household hazardous waste facility.

LA Sanitation runs S.A.F.E. Centers across the city, free for both City and County of Los Angeles residents. S.A.F.E. stands for Solvents, Automotive, Flammables and Electronics. There are limits on how much you can bring per visit, and opening days are limited, so check the current details on the LA Sanitation website before you drive out.

Why this matters to your price

Every one of those routes costs more than a landfill trip. Recycling a mattress, recovering refrigerant from a fridge and processing electronics all add cost that a plain dump run does not.

That is a large part of why a proper removal costs more than hiring a truck, and it is worth knowing what you are paying for.
