Mattresses are one of the most awkward things to get rid of. They are heavy, they flop around, they do not fit in most cars, and you cannot just leave one in the trash bin. If you are in West Covina with an old mattress to dispose of, here are your options, starting with the free ones.
Free option 1: California’s mattress recycling program
California has a statewide mattress recycling program run by the Mattress Recycling Council under the name Bye Bye Mattress. When you buy a new mattress or box spring in California, a recycling fee is added at checkout, and that fee pays for the program. In return, you can drop off used mattresses and box springs at participating collection sites at no charge.
Mattresses are worth recycling. The steel springs, foam, fiber and wood can be separated and reused instead of taking up landfill space. You can find a participating drop-off site on the program’s website, byebyemattress.com.
Keep in mind: you have to get the mattress there yourself, which usually means a truck or a large vehicle and a second person to help carry it.
Free option 2: Retailer take-back when you buy new
If the old mattress is leaving because a new one is arriving, ask the store about taking the old one away at delivery. Retailers that deliver mattresses often offer to remove your used one when they drop off the new one.
Keep in mind: arrange it when you buy, and have the old mattress stripped and ready when the delivery crew arrives.
Free option 3: Bulky-item pickup through your trash service
Many cities in the area include a limited number of free bulky-item pickups through their residential trash hauler, and mattresses are a common item on those lists. Check your city’s trash hauler or public works page to see how it works in West Covina.
Keep in mind: pickups usually need to be scheduled ahead, and the mattress has to be at the curb on the right day. Mattresses left out in the rain become much heavier and harder to recycle, so try to time it carefully.

Tips before pickup day
- Strip the bed. Remove sheets, mattress protectors and pillows.
- Keep it dry. A dry mattress is lighter and more likely to be recyclable.
- Bag it if there are bed bugs. If you suspect bed bugs, wrap the mattress in plastic and tell us before booking so we can let you know whether we can take it.
