This is the hardest kind of clearance, and not because of the volume. It is hard because every decision carries something with it.
Here is an order that people find manageable.
Before anything leaves: the search
Go through the house once looking only for documents and valuables. Nothing gets moved or thrown out on this pass.
Documents. Deeds, titles, insurance policies, military records, tax papers. Usually a desk, a filing cabinet or a bedroom closet shelf.
Cash and jewelry. Often not in obvious places. Check inside books, coat pockets, the backs of drawers and taped under furniture.
Photographs. Frequently in boxes in a garage or attic, and impossible to replace.
Keys and paperwork for anything titled. Vehicles, storage units, safe deposit boxes.
Do this before anyone starts sorting. Once a room is being cleared, things move quickly.
Then: one room at a time
Not the whole house. One room, finished completely, before the next.
The garage or a spare room is usually the easiest place to start, because the emotional weight is lower and finishing something builds momentum.
Leave bedrooms until last.
The four piles
Keep. Family. Donate. Clear.
Give each family member a deadline for collecting their pile. Without a date, items sit for months and nothing finishes.
What needs its own route
Mattresses. Covered by California’s recycling program.
Televisions, computers and appliances. Classified as universal waste in California and handled separately from ordinary trash.
Paint, chemicals and propane. Need a household hazardous waste facility. Anaheim has one on North Blue Gum Street, free for Orange County residents.
Medication. Do not put it in the trash. Many pharmacies and some police stations run take-back programs.
On pacing
There is no correct speed. Some families want it finished in a weekend. Others need it over several visits across a month.
Both are fine. If you would rather do it room by room over time, say so when you book and we will work that way.
What we handle
Whole properties or single rooms, including furniture, appliances, electronics, garage contents, yard debris and anything the family has decided not to keep.
If there is anything you want the crew to watch for, such as papers, photographs or a particular item, tell us before we start.
