Renovation debris is the one category where people’s cost expectations are furthest from reality, and the reason is weight.
Why debris is priced differently
Household junk is priced by the space it takes in the trailer. Construction debris is priced by weight, because that is how the landfill charges at the gate.
A small pile of concrete, tile or soil can outweigh a truckload of furniture while taking a fraction of the room. Anyone quoting you by volume on heavy material is either guessing or about to revise the price.
What the landfill charges
Orange County’s published fee schedule, effective 1 July 2026, lists a disposal rate of $92.70 per ton for qualifying loads over 880 pounds, with additional fees on certain hard-to-handle materials.
That is the gate cost before anyone has loaded anything, driven anywhere, or spent an hour on site.
The Bowerman problem
Frank R. Bowerman Landfill is in Irvine, which leads people to assume they can take a load there themselves.
They cannot. Bowerman does not accept public self-haul. Only Olinda Alpha in Brea and Prima Deshecha in San Juan Capistrano take loads from the public, and both are a drive from Irvine.
So the nearest landfill to an Irvine renovation is not available to the person doing the renovation. Factor that into any plan to handle it yourself.
What counts as construction debris
Drywall, wood, cabinets, flooring, carpet, tile, plaster, paneling, doors, windows, concrete, dirt and stucco.
What does not go in that load
Paint, solvents, adhesives and treated materials need a household hazardous waste facility. Orange County runs four free collection centers for residents, the nearest to Irvine being the center on Oak Canyon.
Note that those centers accept residential waste only. If the work is on a commercial property, that material needs a commercial disposal route.
Getting an accurate quote
Photograph the material and say roughly what it is. A load of drywall and a load of concrete of the same size are very different jobs, and we would rather price it correctly than revise it on the day.
